Destination Imagination

Destination Imagination is a creative problem- solving program for participants from kindergarten through college levels. Each year, the DI Program develops stimulating Team Challenges. DI fosters creative and critical thinking and develops teamwork, collaboration and leadership skills in its members. And best of all, it's *FUN*!

This year we would like to reserve an Improv team especially for those students who also have interest in performing in the Hale play.

For more info, contact: Mike Kopczynski or check out the Stow DI website, the State DI Program, and the National DI site.

MATHCOUNTS

Do you like working with numbers, solving equations and unraveling logic problems? If so, you would enjoy MATHCounts! MATHCounts is an extracurricular program for students interested in extending their math skills. We meet once each week to learn new concepts and solve problems in preparation for the regional Math Counts Tournament in February. Last year Hale placed fourth in this large competition.

The after school meetings are in Mrs. Cimasi’s room, on Tuesdays, from 2:20 to 3:30 pm. We welcome any interested student. We realize that this may conflict with cross country during the fall, but we also can be flexible in working with any committed student who may have scheduling conflicts. Details for the '07-'08 season, TBA.

Math Olympiad (MOEMS)

Grade Six students interested in mathematics are participating in Mathematical Olympiads for Elementary and Middle School students, (MOEMS) during Tutorial period on Day E with Mrs. Flaherty in Rm 207. This program provides opportunities for students to engage in creative problem solving activities which develop a student's ability to reason, to be logical, to be resourceful, and occasionally to be ingenious. Each week students will be preparing for five monthly Olympiad contests to be held in Room 207 on or around November 15th, December 13th, January 10th, February 7th, and March 7th. Individual results will be submitted to MOEMS online. MOEMS awards for individuals and teams will be distributed at the end of the year. Most importantly, students will be learning and having fun solving math problems.

Model United Nations

The Hale Middle School Model United Nations Club meets before school at 7:15 am (day TBA) to plan for the two annual Middle School Model United Nations conferences held at Northeastern University and Bentley College. Each year the conference topics change but they focus on major international issues that are being debated in the United Nations.

Model U.N. students choose countries to represent. They then research that country and its position on a specific issue at the conference. At the Model U.N. Conference, students then try to solve their issue from the perspective of their country by debating with fellow delegates and writing resolutions.

The conferences are held on two Saturdays, one in mid-November and the second in late February or early March. This is a wonderful program and all students who have any interest in international affairs and/or debate should join. All students are welcome at any time during the year. For more information, contact Mr. Keaveney, in Room 304.

The School Store will “hire” interested students who wish to be involved in the inventory, ordering, retailing, cashiering, making change and customer relations aspect of the running a store.

Student employees will be trained by an experienced manager from a retail store on how to operate a departmentalized cash register. There will be many opportunities available to all Hale students to participate during the sales hours and also during the business/operation hours after school one day a month --(day TBA). Applications are available at the store. For more info, contact: Mrs. Dutton, Room 307.

Student Council

return to top

The Hale Middle School Student Council is involved in many activities that help both the members of our school community and the community at-large. As an active organization we put on dances, organize special functions, raise funds to benefit Hale as well as other worthy charities, and we promote student involvement in the issues that affect our school.

The SC usually hosts the first dance of the season as well as a Dress Up day on October 31st. The SC will be organizing the traditional 7th/8th Football game on Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

Meetings are held every Thursday morning at 7AM in room 304 and all students are welcome to attend. Student elections take place in early October but students do not have to run to be voting members. These students are at-large members and have the same voting rights as elected members. For more information, contact Mr. Keaveney, Room 304.

YearBook

The YEARBOOK Club is charged with the task of creating a whole-school yearbook to be completed and distributed by the last day of the school year. The committee is comprised of students from each grade who work together in a variety of roles. Meetings are on Mondays & Wednesdays, from 2:15 - 3:45 in the Computer Lab, Rm 215. The group meets regularly from October through March.

The committee is comprised of two main groups:

A) The Layout Team - Plans the overall layout and format of the yearbook and decides what features will be included. They might conduct a cover contest; collect baby-pictures; design pages; enter text and photos into the LifeTouch templates. They can also design their own collages using Adobe PhotoShop Elements software. In addition, they advertise and market the Yearbooks, and track sales, during the selling season from Jan-March.
B) The Photography Team - photographs activities; scans photos; formats and catalogs images; creates a yearbook Photo-CD. NOTE: Photographers operate on a more flexible schedule; see Mrs. Chan in Rm. 215 or Mrs. Dee in Rm. 305 to indicate your interest in participating.

The yearbook, containing nearly 100 black and white pages, is submitted via the web to LifeTouch Photography for printing and publishing. For the past two years, in addition to the printed YearBook, we also produced an annual Photo-CD for 8th-graders, containing over 2,000 color images taken for the yearbook. Many of these photos were never used in the yearbook, and they can all be loaded onto your personal computer at home for viewing. For more info, contact Mrs. Chan in the Computer Lab, x215.
