Ask anyone to name three scientists and the odds are that they will come up with Einstein, Newton and either Darwin or Marie Curie. Scientists just don’t seem to have the same sort of name recognition that football players, actors or even politicians have, despite the impact that their work has on our daily lives. This could be because of the general public’s perception of science and the stereotype they associate with the type of person who becomes a scientist.
This project was intended to broaden students' familiarity with some of the scientists who have made major contributions to our understanding of the world around us, but have yet to become household names. By looking at their lives we should be able to extend our image of who scientists are and move beyond the stereotype. Click on the Tree of Life to start!
BTW: Do you recognize either of the scientists pictured above? One is a Marine-Biologist and the other an Ethologist... Visit our site to learn more about them, and many others!
